Yountville Veterans Home Awarded Four-star Rating

SACRAMENTO – Veterans Home of California Yountville has been awarded a four-star quality rating by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) as part of that organization’s nationwide five star rating program.

The 4-Star ranking from CMS places the Veterans Home among the top 25 percent of nursing homes in the nation including private and non-profit facilities. CMS published the results in June.

“In the last two years one of our strategic objectives was to achieve the highest ratings possible at our veterans homes. This requires a commitment and hard work from every staff person,” said Secretary Peter J. Gravett. “The personnel at Yountville have made great strides in providing premier care to our nation’s heroes and have received well-deserved recognition for their efforts.”

First launched in 2008, the star-rating system is designed to provide consumers with a more user-friendly way to compare nursing homes within a particular State. Under the Five-Star rating system, nursing homes are assessed in three main categories: health inspections, quality measures and staffing. The overall rating combines scores received in each of the three categories.

The Veterans Home of California, Yountville accepts aged, disabled, and homeless veterans and their spouses. The home has 1,021 total budgeted beds of which 336 Skilled Nursing Facility and Intermediate Care Facility beds were evaluated for this rating. This facility is the largest veterans’ home in the nation. Yountville celebrated its 129th anniversary in April making it one of the oldest veterans homes in the nation.

California is a leader in the premier care it provides veterans and their families. The two other homes in the system that have been evaluated by the CMS program include Barstow (Four Stars) and Chula Vista (Five Stars). The new home in West Los Angeles has not been in operation long enough to be evaluated yet and the new homes in Redding and Fresno have not opened their skilled nursing units yet. Lancaster and Ventura do not offer skilled nursing levels of care and therefore are not included in the program.
