Navy Extends Youth Center and MWR Hours
Beginning in April, Navy Installations Command will extend Child Youth Center and MWR Fitness Center hours of operation in several locations as part of a pilot program. The three locations selected to support the pilot include Naval Base in Bremerton, Wash., Joint Expeditionary Base in Little Creek, Va., and Naval Station in San Diego, Calif. The locations were chosen for the pilot because of their proximity in fleet concentration areas where work requirements extend beyond a normal work day. The pilot program will measure usage and staffing levels required to support the extended hours, and determine whether the expanded hours can be affordably extended to other facilities across the Navy.

Report on Pope AFB Mid-Air Collision
The Air Mobility Command released the results of its accident investigation board (AIB) regarding a Dec. 1, 2014, mid-air collision near Pope Army Airfield and Fort Bragg, North Carolina. A C-130 Hercules assigned to Air Force Reserve Command's 440th Airlift Wing, and a C-27J assigned to the Army Special Operations Command Flight Company, both at Pope AAF, collided approximately 8 miles south of Mackall AAF. Both aircraft declared emergencies and landed safely. There were no injuries to the crewmembers. Two Factors to Blame for F-15 Crash
The U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa have released the results of the accident investigation into the Oct. 8, 2014, crash of an F-15D Eagle near Spalding, Lincolnshire, England. Clear and convincing evidence showed that the mishap was caused by a combination of two factors -- the angle of attack of the aircraft at the time and imperfections in the radome's nose cap assembly. There were no discrepancies to indicate engine, mechanical, flight control, or other problems existed with the aircraft. Odds Against Younger Veterans in Hunt for Job
The unemployment rate for veterans in 2014 was 5.3 percent, down from 6.6 percent in the year before and below the 6 percent rate for civilians, according to Labor Department figures released Wednesday. But younger veterans who served after Sept. 11, 2001, have had a more difficult time. That group had an unemployment rate of 7.2 percent last year. Some have struggled to translate the skills developed in the military to a civilian workforce. For others, the traumas of war have been a barrier. A New Leash on Life
Stars and Stripes reports that at the nonprofit organization Warrior Canine Connection, wounded warriors train service dogs that help other wounded warriors. By interacting with the dogs as they move from puppyhood to training to adult service dogs, Warrior Trainers benefit from a physiological and psychological animal-human connection. As a result of their efforts, Veterans with disabilities receive the finest in trained service dogs. Air Force Combines Officer Accession
The Air Force Officer Training School at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama has removed all service component distinctions from its line officer commissioning courses. Regular Air Force and Reserve cadets no longer receive their commissions through Basic Officer Training or Air National Guard cadets through the Academy of Military Science. With the start of OTS Class 15-03 in early January, all line officer cadets receive the same training at the same time in the same classrooms. Instead of saying they graduated from either BOT or AMS, the newly commissioned officers will simply say that they received their commissions from OTS.

The Air Force selected 26 enlisted Airmen for promotion via the supplemental promotion process. Select the page and scroll down to the supplemental promotion section. USAF Warrior Wellness Program
The U.S. Air Force Academy's Warrior Wellness program has helped over 100 soldiers and their families reconnect amid new realities and rehabilitation. Located on 950 acres here, the equestrian center allows veterans to experience equine-assisted therapy, enjoy a mountain setting and spend quality time with horses and others at no cost. Some veterans also participate in weekly equine-assisted therapy sessions where they spend one-on-one time with a horse and an equine specialist. 2015 Diplomatic Career Fellowship for Vets
The U.S. Department of State is currently accepting applications for the Fall 2015 class of Veterans Innovation Partnership Fellowship Program, also known as VIP Fellows. The main focus of VIP is to build and deploy strategic partnerships between the U.S. government and the U.S. private sector to mobilize resources and build networks to promote foreign affairs career opportunities for veterans. This fellowship will give applicants the opportunity to serve in foreign affairs roles primarily throughout the Department of State, but also at our participating agencies, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), or the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC). The VIP fellowship includes one year of full-time employment, mentoring, and professional development opportunities. VIP fellowships are open to veterans who are enrolled in or have recently completed a master's degree in the fields of international business or international relations. New Army Traffic Regs in Hawaii
U.S. Army Hawaii Regulation 190-5, the new USARHAW Traffic Code went into effect March 16. The regulation specifies violations for alcohol-related offenses, driving above the posted limit, and driving on a suspended or revoked license, among other violations. Soldiers, civilians, family members, contractors and other personnel who work, reside or visit an Army installation in Hawaii are subject to this new regulation. The regulation gives motorists details about driving, distractions and prohibitions when operating motor vehicles, motorcycles, mopeds or bicycles. The new regulation also increases suspensions for offenses. Service members and civilian sponsors are responsible for ensuring their family members and guests are aware of and understand the regulations. Preparing to Move
Preparation for the upcoming peak moving season for service members has begun. Here are several moving tips: (1) use diligent planning, attention to detail and be flexible; (2) once you get orders, immediately start your moving process for a better chance to lock in your preferred pick-up and delivery dates; (3) Create a personal move calendar; (4) ask questions early; (5) keep your phone number and e-mail address up-to-date so that you can be contacted if changes arise with your shipment; (6) pack, pick-up and delivery dates are normally scheduled on weekdays; and (7) when possible, do not ship small, extremely valuable items. Customers using the Move.mil portal for the first time will find online training videos and presentations explaining how to navigate through the move process. New Navy Episode on Malaria
The U.S. Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED) has released the newest episode of its show, "Scrubbing In." The new episode features malaria research experts from Navy Medicine's Infectious Disease Directorate at the Naval Medical Research Center (NMRC) in Silver Spring, Maryland. During the episode, viewers learn how Navy Medicine researchers use mosquitos in a controlled laboratory environment to develop vaccines for diseases such as malaria. The vaccines developed by Naval Medical Research Center are used to treat Navy and Marine Corps service members, as well as the local populations where service members are deployed. 'Onward to Opportunity' Vet training
The Schultz Family Foundation (SFF), the U.S. Department of Defense and the Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University (IVMF) have announced the launch of Onward to Opportunity, a new national program that will deliver tailored, industry-specific training and certifications to service members and spouses on U.S. Military bases prior to transition. This program will provide participants with skill sets to immediately qualify them to work for leading U.S. companies, resulting in a seamless transition from military careers to civilian employment. Onward to Opportunity is supported by a unique coalition of Fortune 500 corporations, government agencies and nonprofits. The program will launch nationwide on up to six military bases and communities in 2015. New Navy Maritime Strategy
The sea services have released a new maritime strategy in a plan that describes how the Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard will design, organize, and employ naval forces in support of national security interests and homeland security objectives. The new strategy, titled A Cooperative Strategy for 21st Century Seapower: Forward, Engaged, Ready, accounts for changes in the global security environment, new strategic guidance, and a changed fiscal environment. Navy Offers Oral Histories of Women Vets
The stories of some of the earliest women in America's Navy have been compiled at the U.S. Naval War College (NWC) in Newport, Rhode Island through a project just completed by college archivists. An oral history project more than 20 years in the making, the Naval Historical Collection at NWC collected and preserved the firsthand accounts of female Sailors and Marines in the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES). VA Changes Health Care Eligibility
Effective 2015, the Department of Veterans Affairs has eliminated the use of net worth as a determining factor for both health care programs and copayment responsibilities. This change makes VA health care benefits more accessible to lower-income veterans. Instead of combining the sum of Veterans' income with their assets to determine eligibility for medical care and copayment obligations, VA will now only consider a Veteran's gross household income and deductible expenses from the previous year. Sound Off: Lower Drinking Age for Troops?

2015 Warrior Games Set for June
The Department of Defense's (DoD's) Warrior Games 2015 will take place June 19-28 at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia. The games is an annual sporting competition bringing together wounded, ill and injured service members and veterans from across the country. This is the first year that the department is organizing the games, which were previously run by the United States Olympic Committee and held at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. The DoD Warrior Games 2015 will feature eight sporting events with about 200 athletes representing teams from the Marine Corps, Army, Navy, and Air Force. Medals for Operation Freedom's Sentinel
The Department of Defense (DoD) has announced that Operation Freedom's Sentinel is now a qualifying operation for award of the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. Service members deployed abroad in support of Operation Freedom's Sentinel outside of the Afghanistan Campaign Medal area of eligibility are now eligible for award of the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal. Know Your Part, Do Your Part
The U.S. Navy has announced the Department of Defense 2015 Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAPM) theme of "Eliminate Sexual Assault: Know your part. Do your part." The effort will focus on raising awareness with an emphasis on bystander intervention. Commands are encouraged to organize events to highlight the awareness and prevention of sexual assault. AF Selective Reenlistment Bonus
Enlisted Airmen in 23 Air Force specialty codes may be eligible to receive a selective reenlistment bonus (SRB) effective March 12. The Air Force will continue to offer SRBs to the 10 critical career fields from the fiscal 2014 program and has added an additional 13 AFSCs to the fiscal 2015 program. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy May Reduce Suicides
Military personnel who receive cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in the short-term may reduce their probability of attempting suicide, according to a recent research from the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio (UTHSCSA). The study conducted at Fort Carson, Colo. focused on patients already at risk or who had attempted suicide before and revealed the effectiveness of the therapy. Patients who received CBT were 60% less likely to commit suicide than soldiers who underwent the standard treatment. The finding of the study entitled "Brief Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy Effects on Post-Treatment Suicide Attempts in a Military Sample: Results of a Randomized Clinical Trial With 2-Year Follow-Up," were recently published in The American Journal of Psychiatry at (http://ajp.psychiatryonline.org/doi/10. ... 4.14070843) ajp.psychiatryonline.org/doi/10.1176/appi.ajp.2014.14070843.

AF Professional Development Teams Meet
Development teams from various Air Force specialties will convene between May and August 2015 to consider eligible line and non-line officers for squadron and deputy group commander positions projected for calendar year 2016. Interested officers can visit the (https://gum-crm.csd.disa.mil/app/login/redirect/home) myPers website for schedules and Airmen Development Plan statement of intent (SOI) procedures. Officers must route their SOI (if required) through their senior rater to appropriate Air Force Personnel Center assignment teams by April 17. DoD Budget Plans Alarm JCS
The Joint Chiefs of Staff and other military leaders over the past week have sharpened warnings that force readiness is unraveling and it could plummet if Congress allows the next round of defense cuts mandated by the 2011 Budget Control Act (BCA), with its sequestration tool, to take effect Oct. 1. Some in Congress are suggesting the use of the Department of Defense's Overseas Contingency Operations (OCO) account to cover the shortfall, but many see that as a temporary fix at best.
