Memorial Service for Jesse G. Ugalde, Past Director,

A memorial service to celebrate Jesse G. Ugalde’s life will be held on Saturday, July 23, 2011 at 12:00 p.m. a the Veterans Museum and Memorial Center, 2115 Park Boulevard, San Diego, Ca 92101.
Ugalde will be laid to rest with full military honors on July 26, 2011, 9:00 a.m., at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, 1800 Cabrillo Memorial Dr., San Diego, CA 92101.
Jesse G. Ugalde, November 21, 1921 to July 10, 2011, beloved husband, father, friend, and honored U.S. Army Colonel, died in his home July 10, 2011. Ugalde was loved and respected by many and will be greatly missed. His dedication and service to both his country and family will be in the hearts and minds of all those who knew him. Ugalde was most well known for his dedication and service to the U.S. Army and support for veterans from all branches of the military. He devoted 33 years of his life protecting and serving this country and continued to give his service to many related organizations even after he retired.
During World War II, he fought in Africa, Sicily and Italy. In Sicily at age 21, he personally received an on-the-spot promotion to Captain from General Patton. He later served in the Korean conflict and on the Joint Staff of the Pacific Command during the Cold War. He was Senior Advisor to the Vietnamese Army during the Vietnam War. He was one of the original Green Beret officers and an Army aviator qualified to fly both planes and helicopters. Ugalde’s recorded oral history is part of the Library of Congress’ Oral History Project. It can be accessed at Library of Congress Veterans Oral History Project .
Ugalde served as Director of the California Department of Veterans Affairs from 1985-91. As director, he helped aid many veterans and their dependents, including a $3 billion home loan program, as well as, a 1,500-bed veterans home and hospital.
