More Vets Seeking Mental Healthcare
The number of veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq receiving mental healthcare from the Veterans Affairs Department climbed more than 300% in the five years through 2010, to 139,000 veterans, according to a new report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO). The Department of Veterans Affairs awarded $7.5 million to the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) to provide recreation and sport activities for disabled veterans and disabled members of the Armed Forces. Under terms of the agreement, VA funds are provided to the USOC's member organizations, Paralympic Sports Clubs and veteran and military organizations to start community-based, physical activity programs. Grant to Employ Homeless Veterans
The Denver Department of Human Services has awarded the national nonprofit organization Veterans Green Jobs a grant of $100,000 to assist low-income and homeless veterans with employment services. The grant will enable Veterans Green Jobs, through its Permanent Change of Station (PCS) Program, to recruit and place 10 qualifying veterans into a transitional work program in the Denver area. Rec Fees Waived on Veterans Day
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will waive day-use fees for veterans, active and reserve component servicemembers, and their families at the more than 2,400 Corps-operated recreation areas nationwide on Veterans Day, November 11. The day-use fee waiver requires only verbal confirmation of service. This waiver covers boat launch ramp and swim beach fees. The waiver does not apply to camping and camping-related services, or fees for specialized facilities such as group picnic shelters. VA Compromise on Religious Issues
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has agreed to a settlement that is consistent with its policies for ensuring that families' religious preferences are respected when their loved ones are laid to rest at the National Cemetery in Houston. Under the settlement, local members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars District 4 and a local organization named the National Memorial Ladies will resign their positions as official VA volunteers and instead will be free to make their services known to local funeral homes that make arrangements for the families and do so in their private capacity. Families can then decide what, if any, services they would like these groups to provide at their committal services. American Legion Plans Legacy Run
The 2012 American Legion Legacy Run Home will start on August 12, 2012 in upstate New York. The riders will travel the 850-mile Run through Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana before approaching Indianapolis the afternoon of Aug. 23, 2012. The American Legion Riders Expo will run from Aug. 23-25 in the Indianapolis area and will feature a planned series of American Legion Rider social events. The American Legion Legacy Run provides college scholarships for the children of U.S. servicemembers killed on active duty on or after Sept. 11, 2001.

An audit by the Michigan Office of the Auditor General raises questions about the costs of running a state program that gives grants to distressed Michigan veterans or their families, noting that 49 percent of the money spent in 2009-10 went for administration. The Liberty Institute has filed a motion seeking to appeal after the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals recently denied a request to rehear the case after ruling in favor of the American Civil Liberties Union.
