Veterans Village of San Diego to Host CalVet and HCD
The California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet) and the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) will meet at Veterans Village of San Diego (VVSD) to work on new partnerships and Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) among them. These partnerships and MOU’s are designed to help create affordable housing options for veterans who have been or are on the verge of becoming homeless.
CalVet and HCD are responding to Governor Brown’s call for greater collaboration in government through his recent Executive Order creating the Inter-Agency Council on Veterans.
CalVet, HCD and members of the homeless veterans service providers community will discuss these new partnerships and MOU’s with the news media during a news conference to be held:

Background: Currently there are 24,000 homeless veterans living on the streets in California. In addition, veterans have a higher potential to become chronically homeless than the civilian population. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), weak support networks, substance abuse and unemployment are primary causes for veterans’ homelessness. For more than 20 years, VVSD has been a leader in helping veterans recover from mental and physical trauma sustained in the line of duty. Currently, VVSD serves more than over 500 veterans on a daily basis. VVSD is a nationally-recognized leader in providing prevention, intervention, treatment and employment services to military veterans, including men and women who have recently returned from Iraq and Afghanistan.
