Disabled Veteran Business Efforts Awarded for Excellence
At a ceremony in Citrus Heights today, Lawrence Gonzales, CalVet Undersecretary presented awards recognizing outstanding contributions to California’s Disabled Veteran Business Enterprise (DVBE) community. The awards were part of the State Agency Recognition Awards (SARA) ceremony during which the Department of General Services honored nine state agencies and 16 state employees for their outstanding work with California small businesses and disabled veterans’ businesses.
Gonzales presented the 2011 John K. Lopez Award for Individual Excellence to Ron Mitchell of Hensel Phelps Construction. As General Superintendent of Construction at the new California Veterans Home in Fresno, Mitchell committed to 15% DVBE participation on the project and achieved 17%--far exceeding the State’s DVBE goal of 3%. Mitchell’s efforts resulted in over 21 million dollars in contracts for 44 DVBE companies.
Gonzales also presented the 2011 John K. Lopez Award for Business Excellence. The Robert Thomas Brown Company received the award for its dedicated support of disabled veterans through its hiring, training, mentoring, and leadership of service-disabled veterans.
“It was an honor to be a part of an event that recognizes outstanding achievement by and for our service-disabled veterans,” said Gonzales. “The DVBE program allows disabled veterans to complete more effectively in the marketplace, gain experience in business, and share their expertise with others in the industry. It’s one of the many benefits they’ve earned through their service and sacrifice to our country,” he said.
