Applying ACE Credits
ACE was created in 1942 to recognize the educational value of military training and experience. Through ACE, you can take academic credit for most of the training you have received, including Basic Training. The ACE military evaluations program is funded by the DoD and coordinated through DANTES. In most cases, ACE recommended credits will be used to fulfill your free-elective requirements, but each college determines the number of credits they will accept, and how they will be applied toward your degree. Pre-qualifying for a VA home loan is free of obligation and doesn't require a credit check. The process is an indicator of where the potential home buyer stands with the VA or VA-approved lender handling the loan. The U.S. Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee Chairwoman Patty Murray (D-Wash.) held a hearing entitled "Ending Homelessness Among Veterans: VA's Progress on its Five Year Plan." The hearing discussed the progress the committee has made in its 5-year plan to end homelessness among the nation's veterans, particularly female veterans. Sports Clinic This Week
Nearly 400 disabled Veterans from across the country will attend the National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic March 25 - 30 in Snowmass Village, Colo., near Aspen. In its 26th year, the event is open to all military Veterans with spinal cord injuries or disease, visual impairments, certain neurological conditions, orthopedic amputations or other disabilities, who receive care at any Department of Veterans Affairs health care facility. During the six-day program, Veterans will learn adaptive Alpine and Nordic skiing and be introduced to a variety of other adaptive activities and sports. VA Addresses GI Bill Backlog
Some veterans have experienced delays in receiving their Post 9/11 GI Bill educational benefits for the spring term. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has added additional staff and resources to resolve this situation as quickly as possible. Veterans should also remember that students using their Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits must ask their school officials to complete an enrollment certification, which the school official will send to VA. Rates to Rise in Illinois
The Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs has notified residents of the state-run veterans homes that their monthly costs to stay in the homes will rise as much as 45 percent on July 1, 2012. Beginning July 1, the fee for new residents will be $1,429 per month. Current residents will see a $150 increase beginning July 1 and then $100 increases in each of the next four years, as well as a cost of living adjustment. Vitamin D3 and Alzheimer's
A researcher at the Veterans Affairs Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System has pinpointed how vitamin D3 works with some of the body's cells to help clear the brain of amyloid beta, the main component of plaques that are seen in Alzheimer's disease. Vitamin D3 may activate certain genes and cellular signaling networks to trigger the immune system to clear amyloid beta. New GI Bill for Unemployed Vets
A new GI Bill program, now known as Veterans Retraining Assistance Program (VRAP), will offer up to 12 months of Montgomery GI Bill benefits for older unemployed veterans. The program is part of the VOW to Hire Heroes Act which also includes tax breaks for companies that hire veterans. That means that pre-9/11 veterans who often feel left out, may soon qualify for as much as $17,600 ($1473 a month) for education and training. Scholarship for Women Veterans
The AARP Foundation is accepting entries to its sixth annual Women's Scholarship Program. The scholarships provide funds to low-income older women who are seeking new job skills, training and educational opportunities to support themselves and their families. One of the focuses of the program is older women veterans age 50+. The scholarship application period for the 2012-2013 academic year will be open until Friday, March 30, 2012 at 4 p.m. MT. VA Launches Contest
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has launched a new contest to help the people who help the homeless. Project REACH (Real-time Electronic Access for Caregivers and the Homeless) challenges the developer community to create easy, mobile access to resources that the homeless need. The contest will be conducted in two phases. Obama Supports Mount Soledad Cross
Stars and Stripes reports that the Obama administration is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to allow a 43-foot-tall cross that serves as a war memorial to remain atop Mount Soledad near San Diego, arguing the cross that has been there since 1954 is not an endorsement of religion. President Obama urged the justices to reverse a decision of the 9th U.S. Circuit of Appeals that last year held the cross was primarily a Christian symbol and unconstitutional. A federal judge is allowing the ACLU Foundation of Southern California's lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to proceed through the courts. The lawsuit concerns VA's alleged failure to provide housing and services for thousands of mentally impaired veterans. The VA had sought to have the case dismissed. Study Examines Veterans
A Pew Research Center survey has found that 47 percent of veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan who were surveyed rate their adjustment back to civilian life as difficult. Of the 1,853 veterans surveyed, half of those who saw combat report signs of post-traumatic stress disorder, including nightmares and/or flashbacks of combat experiences. Universal Gold Star License Plates
Many states believe that the honor given to a family for the death of a loved one should not vary depending on details of where and when it happened. WWII Soldiers' Information Available
When 28,969 New York National Guard Soldiers mobilized in the fall of 1940 as the United States prepared for war, clerks filled out six- by- four inch cards on each man. The records list names, serial number, home, and unit, and later on annotated with hand written notes on whether or not the Soldier was killed or wounded. WWII Soldiers' Information Available
When 28,969 New York National Guard Soldiers mobilized in the fall of 1940 as the United States prepared for war, clerks filled out six- by- four inch cards on each man. Now the cards are available online from the (http://dmna.ny.gov/historic/reghist/wwi ... iv_Fed.htm) New York State Military Museum. The records list names, serial number, home, and unit, and later on annotated with hand written notes on whether or not the Soldier was killed or wounded. The 2012 National Defense Authorization Act was signed on December 31, 2011, which locked in a 1.6 percent across-the-board pay raise for 2012. An Overdue Welcome Home
On March 31, the USO will host a free welcome home event for Vietnam Veterans, in a long overdue show of gratitude for those who served. VA will be on hand to sign up veterans for services and care.
