Legion to Train Women Veteran Entrepreneurs
The American Legion has announced a two-day entrepreneurial course, "For Her Entrepreneurship - Resources, Opportunities, Experiences & Support (For HEROES)," to take place in conjunction with its annual national convention in Houston August 26-27. The free-of-charge course is specifically designed for women military veterans and military spouses. Participants who complete this course will also be provided access to an eight-week online Foundations of Entrepreneurship course. New Website Aids Women Veterans
Labor Department officials have launched a new website devoted to issues and challenges affecting women veterans. The new website highlights potential challenges that may affect the economic security of women veterans. The website also contains links with information on employment opportunities, education and health care options and data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and other government agencies. House Hearing on VA Appeals
The Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs of the House Committee on Veterans Affairs recently held a hearing that reviewed the post-decision process for appealed veterans' disability claims. The subcommittee attempted to address the question, "Why are veterans waiting years on appeal?" VA Outpatient Clinics at Risk
The American Legion recently submitted (http://www.legion.org/documents/word/As ... 062713.doc) written testimony to a House hearing in Washington, warning that many community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs) across the country, operated by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), will not be replaced when their leases expire. Congress failed to provide funding for the CBOCs because of concerns over the high cost. For example, if VA were to sign a 20-year lease for a building in Valparaiso, Ind., to serve as a CBOC for veterans in the greater Chicago area, the department would have to budget for the entire 20-year amount in the first fiscal year of the lease. The Legion questioned the validity of such a budget-scoring process in its written testimony for the hearing by the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs: "Assessing VA's Capital Investment Options to Provide Veterans' Care." Thousands of Guardsmen to be Furloughed
More than 1,100 National Guard soldiers and airmen in Hawaii - and thousands in other states - will be living with 20 percent less pay over the next three months as the Defense Department carries out automatic federal budget cuts. The military's furloughs were only supposed to involve civilians, but large numbers of National Guard members who wear Army and Air Force uniforms full-time will experience them as well.

Under current law, survivors that are eligible to receive both SBP and DIC benefits (the annuity they paid for with their premiums and government compensation for the loss of a service member) quickly learn they cannot collect both benefits. One benefit offsets the other -- dollar for dollar-- leaving many of our survivors stunned, angry, and financially strapped, potentially for a lifetime. (In this case, offset means that one benefit is reduced dollar for dollar for every dollar received in the other benefit.) The total cannot exceed a set amount.

Homeless Vet Program to get VETS Grants
The U.S. Department of Labor's Veterans' Employment and Training Service (VETS) has announced an award of 121 grants, totaling almost $29 million, to provide more than 14,000 veterans across the nation with job training, job placement, housing and other services. The grants were awarded through the Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program (HVRP). The HVRP grants will help homeless veterans reintegrate into society and the labor force while providing effective services such as job placement, on-the-job training, career counseling, life skills and money management mentoring, as well as help in finding housing. Verna Jones, director of The American Legion's Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation Division, testified before the House Veterans' Affairs Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs in favor of several bills related to the disability claims backlog -- the number of which the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has recently whittled down to about 520,000. Noting VA's recent achievement of resolving -- in 60 days -- all claims that had been pending for two years or longer, the Legion asked why these practices were not employed earlier. And since these claims were adjudicated so rapidly, does the Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) "feel confident in the accuracy?" New Resource for Vets in Kansas
Gov. Sam Brownback of Kansas recently unveiled a new state website that pulls together information on educational opportunities, jobs and health care for military members. The new (http://kcva.ks.gov/kanvet) KanVet site is a one-stop shop for the state's 7,700 National Guard members and 227,000 military veterans. The new website will be useful to veterans who need to develop job skills, as well as those that have valuable job skills from their service time but are unsure how to translate them to the private sector.

The new website will be useful to veterans who need to develop job skills, as well as those that have valuable job skills from their service time but are unsure how to translate them to the private sector.
