Washington, D.C. – House Veterans’ Affairs Committee Chairman Bob Filner (D-CA) released the following statement on the nomination of James B. Peake for the Secretary of Veterans Affairs:
“Today’s nomination of Lieutenant General James B. Peake is a much-needed first step in bringing about strong leadership at the Department of Veterans Affairs.
“I look forward to meeting with Dr. Peake to learn more about his plans for the Department of Veterans Affairs. The VA is so critical to the men and women who have put their lives on the line for this nation and the veterans of this country need an independent leader to turn the VA around.
“The next VA Secretary cannot be the victim of this Administration’s misplaced priorities. This Administration was ill-prepared to deal with the impact of the unique health care needs of our returning service members and has failed to adequately address the long-standing problems faced by our veterans from previous conflicts.
“It is my hope that Dr. Peake’s role as the senior physician in the Army, his experience as a highly decorated and wounded veteran, and his recent work with the medical, disability and health communities in the private sector will equip him to address the unresolved problems plaguing the VA. Too many people think the VA stands for ‘Veterans Adversary.’ The next VA Secretary needs to work hard so that the VA will stand for ‘Veterans Advocate.’”
