CDVA Acting Secretary Chavez-Semi-annual Meeting

PARTNERING TO SERVE OUR NATION’S VETERANS
Los Angeles– Acting Secretary Rocky Chavez will host the Semi-annual California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet) Secretary’s Conference. This conference themed, “Partnering To Serve Our Nation’s Veterans,” is designed to provide veteran stakeholders with an opportunity to hear about new initiatives of CalVet, while being able to dialogue directly with other veteran leaders and department leadership about the state of veterans services in California and the nation.
EVENT: CalVet, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, local agencies, community groups, and homeless veteran providers are teaming together to help find new and innovative ways to help veterans receive their benefits. This conference will focus on all aspects of veterans issues with a special emphasis on homelessness.

TIME: 10:00AM-2:00PM Note: although the meeting itself will be closed to media, interviews with speakers and veteran leadership will be available and B-roll shots will be allowed.

WHO: Acting Secretary Rocky Chavez, the Chief Medical Officer of the USDVA Skye McDougall, M.D., the Mental Health Coordinator for the USDVA in Los Angeles Peter Hauser, M.D., Director of the USDVA LA Regional Office Dennis Kuewa, and homeless service providers including, Executive Director of New Directions Toni Reinis, CEO of PATH Joel John Roberts, and the Director of the San Joaquin Valley Veterans Programs Elizabeth Vasquez.
BACKGROUND: California is home to approximately 2 million veterans, 24,000 of whom are homeless. With more than 30,000 veterans expected to return to California each year CalVet, the Federal VA and external stakeholders need to have comprehensive plans in place to help administer services like housing, compensation and pension, health etc. The semi-annual CalVet Secretary’s Conference is held in order to help enhance communication and strengthen efforts within the veteran community to serve all veterans in California.
