Army Celebrates 236th Birthday
“The Continental Army was established 236 years ago on June 14, 1775 in order to defend vulnerable colonies and secure our independence from tyranny and repression. Since that time American soldiers have been the protectors of our Nation’s freedom and a friend to our allies. Being a soldier goes beyond physical endurance and mental preparedness. It encompasses an unconquerable spirit as well as high ethical and moral values. These traits are not only desirable in a person, but in a nation that strives to live up to the principles and dream of its founders. The Army’s birthday is recognition of its history, traditions, and service to the Nation and commemorates America’s soldiers, families and civilians.
“As we celebrate our Army’s birthday, remember that we still have more than 120,000 Active, Reserve and National Guard soldiers fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq. These soldiers continue to preserve America’s peace and security and provide the defense of the United States. June 14th also marks the occasion when the Second Continental Congress adopted the U.S. Flag by resolution. Our flag stands as a symbol for unity and our collective history. It is because of the strength and commitment of our military our flag stands as a reminder to the world that no matter the challenge the United States will stand together in defense of its citizens and its ideas. Today please thank a member of our United States Army and remember that America is the land of the free because it’s the home of the brave.”
