John K. Lopez, Disabled Veterans Advocate Passes Away (Updated)

It is with great sadness that the California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet) joins the family of John K. Lopez in mourning his passing. Lopez was 78 years old.

“On behalf of CalVet, I offer my sincere condolences and prayers to the family and friends of John K. Lopez, who passed away the morning of April 13,” said Peter J. Gravett, CalVet Secretary. “John was a true friend to veterans and to his community. We are saddened by his passing, but are thankful for his service to our Nation. May he forever rest in peace. Semper Fi.”

Lopez was instrumental in pioneering entrepreneurial development among disabled veterans and for his efforts was honored by CalVet with the JOHN K. LOPEZ Award for Entrepreneurship Excellence. To forever pay homage to his accomplishments, CalVet annually recognizes a service disabled veteran-owned business with this award during the State Agency Recognition Awards (SARA).

CalVet’s award should not be confused with the JOHN K. LOPEZ, KEEPING THE PROMISE award, which is given annually by the Disabled Veterans Business Enterprise (DVBE) Alliance during their Keeping the Promise Expo. We apologize for the confusion.
